white daikoku pillar + tree
(daikoku pillar: a column that historically served as both the structural and symbolic center of the japanese house)
this project is a house for a family of three and one cat, set in a nature-rich suburban context surrounded by mature trees. at its center stands a structural column that was initially seen as an obstacle within daily circulation.
rather than concealing it, the design reinterprets the column through the historical meaning of the daikoku-bashira. it is repositioned as a symbolic vertical element and spatial core of family life.
spiral steps integrated with lighting wrap around the column, allowing the cat to climb freely and transforming it into a cat tower. clad in white marble, its natural veining visually resonates with the trees in the garden.
the column can be perceived both as the symbolic center of the house and as part of a continuous system of trunks connecting interior and exterior. it forms a place where family life unfolds three-dimensionally, gradually inscribing memories over time.
